Campaign Guide to Stop Hate Speech

in the Local Administrations Elections to be held on 31 March 2024

What and Whom the Campaign Targets: In the elections held in Turkey in the last decade, we see that -increasingly- election campaigns that incite hatred, discrimination and hostility towards disadvantaged and minority groups are being carried out. We are faced with the same picture before the Local Administrations Elections to be held on 31 March 2024.

As civil society organisations and human rights defenders who are members of the “Network Against Discrimination”, our goal is to draw attention to the fracture in the social fabric caused by hate speech and to invite political parties and politicians, especially the Supreme Board of Elections (YSK), the Turkey Human Rights and Equality Institution (TİHEK), and all voters to take joint steps to stop hate speech during election periods.

What Have We Done?

  1. We made an official application to the Supreme Council of Election of the Republic of Turkey and Turkey Human Rights and Equality Institution: We submitted an official application to the Supreme Board of Elections (SBE) and the Equality and Human Rights Institution of Turkey (TİHEK) with our 10-article demands for an effective solution to this issue.
  2. Published a Manifesto to Stop Hate Speech: We published a 10-point manifesto on what we, as the Supreme Board of Elections (SBE), TİHEK, political parties, politicians and voters, can do to stop hate speech during election periods.
  3. We prepared social media content to spread our message #Take Action to Stop Hate Speech!
